Taliep Petersen Murder: Beginnings

It had been a busy week for Award-winning Cape Town theatre personality, Taliep Petersen. It was a Saturday night, 16 December 2006, and he had just returned to Cape Town the day before after opening the production on Gjoema in London.

Saturday had kept him busy too, as he had celebrated the 21st birthdays of his nephew and niece where he had even given a speech. His own daughter’s 21st birthday would be coming up in January, so the next month or so would have been very festive.

taliep.jpgShortly before midnight, at 11:45pm, the door-bell rang. Everyone was upstairs and Taliep decided that he would go and see who was there at this late hour. He opened the door and in burst three masked, armed men.

The masked men ran upstairs and demanded their wallets, cellphones and watches. They then locked Petersen’s wife, Najwa and their youngest daughter in one room. His step-son, Gamieldien, his wife and one month old son were locked in another room.

“They asked me where Taliep’s safe was. I said I didn’t know and then they locked us up. Everything was quiet for a few moments and then we just heard a single gunshot,” Gamieldien said.
