The shambles of the South African Paralympic organisers has now hit the international news with people wondering how such a mess-up could have occurred.
I have spent some time chatting with people from around the world, each of whom have brought up the debacle. Mostly they wonder how it is possible that a country which was once the envy of the world could sink so low.
Some of the people from Germany, UK and Italy have also raised major concerns about South Africa’s ability to organise the World Cup if they can not organise something as simple as participation in the Paralympics. I must say that I am feeling much the same way myself.
According to my sources close to the SA team, it looks as if some form of sanctions are going to be taken against Oscar Pistorius by Sascoc for blowing the whistle on their unprofessionalism and incompetency. From what I hear he is going to be sanctioned for ‘breaking a contract with Sascoc’. Whatever these ’sanctions’ are, we can only guess.
I guess it is usual for government and quasi-government officials to blame the whistleblower instead of pointing the finger squarely at themselves. I doubt that there will be any ’sanctions’ against any of these officials for their downright appalling service and behaviour.
Having been in Beijing the last couple of months, I must say that I am often very embarrassed to say that I am South African due to all the kak that has surrounded the SA team at the Olympics this year. We have become a laughing stock to the rest of the world!
Again I would like to wish Oscar and all the other Paralympians the very best of luck despite the obstacles. Go for the gold guys!
