Zimbabwe: A shadow of things to come?

There are a number of things which bother me about the Zimbabwe crisis, but one in particular that really bugs me: The reaction of the other African leaders and in particular those in South Africa.

It seems that the other African countries do not particularly care what happens in Zimbabwe. In fact some like Angola have already made it clear that they would send armed aid to Mugabe if he asked for it!

Why does Mbeki not condemn the Zimbabwe fiasco? Why does the ANC leadership not do so? Could it be that they are also planning on grasping onto power, even if the people don’t want it?

By saying very little of importance, and in some cases denying the crisis, this seems to speak volumes - and not the volumes that we the people would like to hear. If these leaders are not standing up for democracy and the wishes of the people, what does that say about what they think of their own people and constitution?

Zuma has been the most outspoken of the ANC leaders, condemning the raid on the MDC offices and by stating that he believes that the elections may have been sabotaged. However can we really believe that this is what he believes? After all he is trying to get as much support as possible - particularly from the western powers. So of course he is going to say things that they want to hear - but do we believe that HE believes in what he is saying? We can only see how the world reacted to Mbeki’s non-statement that there was no crisis.

Could this Zimbabwe crisis just be a foreshadow of a future South African crisis?
