Have you survived?
Have you managed to survive the cold and rain that has been sweeping across the country? Well the bad news is that a whole lot more is apparently on the way!
The South African Weather Service said 34 new records were set on Monday and another 20 on Tuesday - so much for global warming! I can’t help but wonder whether Eskom will be able to cope with this winter. Apparently the Western Cape could be the hardest hit with power outages etc due to ‘maintenance’ work being done on some of the power stations.
I have written previously about this, but it seems as though Eskom has something to say about us skeptics:
“We have enough capacity to meet the full demand of South Africa and its international commitments. In many cases the problem with outages lies on the distribution side at municipal level and Eskom then unfairly gets the blame. I can also confirm that at this stage there is no load shedding schedule, but in the case of a generating emergency, shortages will be spread nationally, thereby avoiding the problem where one region is left without power for long periods,” Spokesperson Fani Zulu said two days ago.
This is contrary to a report on the IOL website the day before which warned of power outages. So what is going to happen? I guess time will tell.
For those who do suffer outages in the cold, please be careful when using fires, generators etc. Remember that these can be dangerous and every year there are many deaths and accidents because of them - yes, even in urban areas! Use common sense and be safe this winter!
