Tokyo for President ?
Tokyo Sexwale has finally been asked whether he would consider running for the ANC presidency. The whole debate sprang to life after his interview with the BBC World programme Hard Talk. In it he said that he would consider the job, if he was nominated.
On the flipside, Sexwale told the BBC, on its Hard Talk program: “I’m not desperate for a job. I’m not desperate to be president of the party or South Africa. It’s a job that comes with a lot of problems and pressures. It’s onerous, it’s not a nice job… it’s also a job where you take a salary cut. It’s a job I would do without having to take that salary”.
Many people in the business world see Sexwale as the perfect guy for the job. Not only has he had the political experience of being a provincial premier, but is also a top businessman. He is also very similar to Mbeki in his politics: encouraging investment.

His biggest challenge would come from Jacob Zuma. Rape and Corruption trials aside, he has the support of COSATU, ANC Youth League and the South African Communist Party. He also has an enormous grassroots following.
The third possible candidate is the ANC secretary-general Kgalema Motlanthe. Trade union leaders are increasingly talking of transferring their allegiance away from Zuma to Motlanthe for the country’s next presidency. May people feel that Zuma has been ‘tainted’ and that Motlanthe would make a good compromise.
