ANC’s democracy in Durban
After a successful march in Durban against the proposed name changes, the ANC still insists that what they want will happen. 10 000 marchers disagree with name changes and see it as a slap in the face to the people of Durban.
Take a look at some of the comments from eThekwini Mayor Obed Mlaba AFTER the march:
Mlaba described the marchers as people “who chose to refuse to let go of the past”.
“The reality is that the street names will change”
He described the response to the renaming as “hysterical and emotive”
He wasn’t even there to receive the memorandum - no-one else from the council either.
They have already angered many of the Inkhata people by wanting to rename Mangosuthu Highway after the ANC leader Griffiths Mxenge instead. It is becoming painfully clear that wherever the ANC is in control, they are using the power to force through name changes honouring only their heroes. So much for inclusiveness and consultation!
City Manager Mike Sutcliffe said in a newsletter at the weekend that there was “little point in… the public simply sending in general complaints that they don’t want streets renamed… it is unlikely that council will rescind that decision”.
However if you wish to comment on this matter, Durban residents have until May 11 to submit comments, suggestions, criticism or approval of the proposed name changes. Comments are to be sent to: Municipal Manager, 41 Margaret Mncadi Avenue, Durban 4001 or e-mail corporategis@durban.gov.za
