Durban/Jhb High Speed Train
Did you guys hear that the KZN government wants to build a high speed train between Durban and Johannesburg! How cool is that?!
It really is about time that South Africa did something positive about its transport infrastructure. The trains have sucked for years and in many cases you risk life and limb by going on one of them! Road infrastructure just seems to be getting worse, with potholes all over the show. Flying is becoming better - if you can put up with the commute to the airport, crowded airports, delays etc. As for buses, they seem to be going the way of the trains these days!
We always talk about developing South Africa etc but we don’t really see it. Recently it seems as though the KZN government may be heading along the right track. They are building the new airport which should be waaay better than the old one, there are plans to redevelop the waterfront (OK yes these plans have been there since I was a kid!) and now the high speed train. they seem to realise that a better transport infrastructure will bring the much needed jobs etc to the province.
Wouldn’t it be great to have a good high speed train network? Durban -> Johannesburg -> Cape Town -> Durban would be wonderful. People would have a real alternative to flying. Industry will have a fast solution for the delivery of goods. The only thing I would be worried about was people stealing the lines, putting rocks on the tracks etc!
I remember taking a trip on one of the high speed Euro trains. you could get from Amsterdam to Paris in just a couple hours or so. Very convenient for short day trips. If we actually got this high speed train, would it allow ‘Vaalies’ to pop down for day trips to the beach? Or Durbanites to go to Jhb for a day shopping trip? Yeah it all sounds good to me!
